"Self Defense" Is Likely To Result In Your Defeat! The term “self defense” is recognized around the world as the term used to keep oneself safe if/when attacked. Unfortunately, when we relate to this common terminology, we are immediately at a disadvantage that might unknowingly lead directly to our defeat. What thoughts or images does the term “self defense” conjure up? When I think of the word “defense”, or “defend”, I think of protection, putting up a barrier or shield to withstand an attack. My Webster’s dictionary defines “defend” as “to guard, protect, hold against danger or attack”; “maintain against opposition, to safeguard something against danger”. To relate to these terms under this kind of definition automatically puts us at a severe disadvantage in a confrontational situation. This is because the attitude is one of reaction and protection. Our attention is on ourselves, and we become withdrawn, both psychologically and physically. In order to protect yourself against a violent attack, you must remove yourself from the situation, or eliminate the threat. You must be pro-active once you realize a dangerous situation exists. You can’t hope that by providing a proper “defense”, that you will remain safe. My instructor used to say, “You can’t win a fight by blocking”. How true. Make no mistake, real survival against a violent attack can be ugly. You must become pro-active, aggressive with fierce tenacity and forward intention. If at all possible, strike first, strike fast, and strike hard! Overwhelm your attacker. Bring the fight to him. Force him to defend, and become the victim himself. Remember, the words we use and the definitions we attach to these words have a tremendous effect on our thoughts and behavior; much of which is on a subconscious level. Many times, the best self defense is a great offense! Train Hard, or Go Home! Sifu Trey Crake |
