Some people have had trouble setting their Forum Avatar image, the small thumbnail that displays with your name next to each of your forum posts. I'm writing some guidelines to help people out with this. The Fireboard Forum requires that Avatar images be no larger than 40kb and no larger than 80x80 pixels. On any forum page, it may display dozens of posts and each one may have an associated Avatar image, so it has to constrain both the filesize and dimensions so that your browser doesn't get bogged down while loading and so that the layout of the page isn't dominated by pictures rather than the actual posts.
You may need to resize your image before Fireboard Forum will accept it. You can use any image editor you like, or one of the many websites that offer image editing services, like
http://resizepic.com and
http://www.resizr.com. To resize your image on Resizr, go to
http://www.resizr.com, then click the Browse button and select the image you want to use. Click the Upload button to send it to the server. It'll display your image and show you several options. You can use the tools provided to crop your image if you need to, but the important part is to get the size down to a maximum of 80x80. Either height or width can be lower than 80 if you want a rectangle rather than a square. Odds are good that if you get down to that dimension, the filesize will be well below 40kb. For example, when I resized my 119kb image to 80x79, it dropped to 3kb.
Click the "Resize My Image" button and wait. When it's done, it'll present your resized image and explain how to save it. Do so, then come back to the MAASD forum and click the "Set My Avatar" link. Click the Browse button, find your new image, and select it. Click Upload. If it's successful, it will tell you that your Avatar image has been uploaded and from now on, it'll be displayed alongside all your posts.
If it fails to upload, or if the image exceeds the dimensions or filesize limitations, it'll show you the upload form again. If you have trouble, feel free to ask for help here.
